Storage F.A.Q.

You Have Questions, We Have Answers…

How long is the lease agreement?

We offer flexible rental agreements, renting storage units on month-to-month basis. In addition, if you lease a storage unit in the middle of the month, we’ll prorate that month’s rent so you’re just paying for the portion of the month you’re renting from us.

What types of security measures do you use to protect my stuff?

At West Coast Self-Storage locations, our number one priority is keeping your valuables secure. We provide high-tech security measures at all of our facilities, some include 24-hour digital video recording, fingerprint or keypad access at all gates and entry points, perimeter fencing and well-lit hallways and grounds. Specific security features vary from location to location. For more information, contact the facility’s Store Manager today.

Do you provide pest control at your facilities?

Yes. Each facility is treated monthly to ensure a pest-free environment.

Are there moving dollies or hand trucks available for use on-site?

Each storage facility has moving carts available for use free of charge. For locations that are U-Haul Neighborhood Dealers, we have appliance hand trucks available to rent as well.

Do your facilities have elevators?

Our facilities with multiple floors have large elevators, making moving in or out of your storage unit easier.

Do you offer moving trucks for rent?

Moving trucks are available for reservation and/or rent at many of our storage locations. For best selection, we recommend calling the facility in advance to reserve the truck you’ll need.

Can I purchase moving supplies at your facilities?

Yes. Each of our facilities carries a wide variety of packing materials including moving boxes, packing tape, stretch wrap and bubble wrap.

How many moving boxes will I need for my move?

This all depends on the amount of stuff you have. Moving.com has a nice packing calculator to help you figure out how many boxes of each size you’ll need. All of our locations offer packing and moving supplies for sale.

What size storage units do you offer?

While it depends on the location, we offer a very wide range of size options to meet your storage needs. These include enclosed sizes as small as 3 x 5 and giant storage units as big as 10 x 30. Some locations have specialty storage such as wine lockers, while others offer RV and boat storage spaces that go up to 15 x 50! Visit our locations page to find the storage facility nearest you.

How big of a storage unit should I get?

We recommend you call or stop by the location nearest you and talk to our experienced storage experts. Tell them what you’re planning on storing and they can guide you to choosing the storage unit size that makes the most sense for your situation. Below we’ve listed a few of the more common storage unit dimensions and what might fit in them.

5x5 storage unit A 5 x 5 storage unit is as big as a large closet and can fit things like a dresser, twin mattress, garden tools, several boxes, small filing cabinet, nightstand and other small items.

5x10 storage unit A 5 x 10 storage unit can house a couch, occasional chairs, 10-20 boxes, double mattress set, sporting equipment like golf clubs or skis, and more. This would be a good size for someone needing to store the contents of their studio apartment.

10x10 storage unit A 10 x 10 storage unit can hold the contents of two bedrooms and works well for bigger items like entertainment centers, dining table and chairs, sofa, loveseat, mattress, lawn equipment and 20-30 boxes.

Can I store a car in a storage unit? What size should I choose?

Many of our locations offer car storage options. These can be enclosed storage units (with roll-up door), or outdoor storage units that are either covered or uncovered. The size of storage space you’ll need depends on the length and width of the vehicle and whether you plan on using the space to store additional items. As a rule of thumb, we suggest that you choose a storage unit with a minimum depth of 20 feet. In this size, most of our units will be 10 feet wide, giving you room to open the doors. To find the specific dimensions of your vehicle, Car-Dimensions.com lists many of the makes and models of autos are there today.

What is the difference between heated and climate-controlled storage?

Heated storage is called that because it literally means that the storage unit or facility provides heat to maintain a minimum temperature during the winter months. During the summer months, the unit’s temperature is not regulated, but typically doesn’t range too high due to high amount of insulation we use for our facilities. Climate-controlled storage means that the units are kept with in a temperature range year-round. This is good for storing items that are extremely sensitive to temperature fluctuations.

Indoor Storage vs. Drive-Up Storage

Indoor storage refers to storage units that are located within the facility and are accessed via interior hallways. The advantages of indoor storage are that you don’t have to be exposed to the elements when accessing the unit. Drive-up units are accessed outdoors via the facility’s driveways. They offer the convenience of easy loading and unloading.

Do I have to come in to rent or can I rent online or via phone?

You can rent a unit in multiple ways. First, you can rent a unit directly from our website. Click on “Select Unit” next to the unit size that fits your needs. In the pop-up box, choose “Move in.” Complete your rental info and make a payment. E-sign your lease agreement on any device, and move-in during office or access hours.

You can also rent via phone. You can pay your first month’s rent with a credit card and we’ll email you the necessary paperwork to get started. Just bring in the signed documents and we can finish the process getting you into your storage unit quickly.

Lastly, you’re always welcome to stop into our office. We can give you a tour of the facility and you can see the unit you want to rent. Then we’ll help you complete the paperwork and give you access to your storage unit!

Do you offer automatic payment options? What types of payment do you accept?

Yes, we do. You can sign up for our direct pay option, which automatically charges your credit card each month. You can also pay online using our convenient online payment system. We accept almost every type of payment including cash, checks, and credit/debit cards.

Who can have access to my storage unit?

You can designate access to additional family members or friends. You may choose to give a separate key and code to have access to the storage unit just as you do.

Do I need to rent a storage unit to buy moving and packing supplies?

No, you don’t. Feel free to stop in anytime during business hours to stock up on our large supply of boxes, packing tape, bubble wrap, packing peanuts, box cutters and more. Be sure to tell the store manager what you plan on packing so they can assist you with the right-sized boxes.

What should I do if I forget my access code?

We can help you with that. Just stop by the storage facility office, show a valid form of ID and our store manager will be glad to assist you.

Can I change my reservation if I make a mistake?

Yes! If you’ve decided you need a different size unit or different amenities, our store manager can help you figure out which unit will serve you best. Just give us a call or stop into our location.

Do I need insurance for my storage unit?

Most storage companies including ours require that you have insurance when you rent a storage unit from us. You can purchase insurance from our carrier, Bader. They offer excellent coverage with rates starting as low as $13. You can also use your own insurance if your policy covers storage unit rentals. Just provide us with a copy of your policy’s declaration page.

Can I see the storage unit I’m renting before I sign a lease?

Absolutely! Please come by our location and our store managers will show you the storage unit you’ve reserved to see if it’s the right size to fit your needs. If you decide you need a different size, we can get that for you!
